Hat trick in Norway
ImageShipServ has scored an e-commerce hat trick by signing up three Norwegian shipping companies within three weeks.
Barber Ship Management, Transpetrol TM, and Solstad Shipping are joining ShipServ TradeNet, the world’s largest e-marketplace for ship supplies trading, with a combined fleet of nearly 200 vessels. This brings the total number of shipping companies to 74 with more than 2,200 vessels.
Commenting on this, Kai Bjorkelund, Managing Director, Transpetrol TM said: E-commerce has been on the agenda for a while, and the main benefit from our view is to get real time data from suppliers directly in to our procurement system without any manual typing. The demand of purchasing resources will be reduced for such work and they can use their time on more strategic purchasing.

OBC goes fast forward
Ocean Bulk Carriers, which is part of the OBC Group of Companies, has set a record for being the fastest company to go live on the e-marketplace, ShipServ TradeNet. Within a week after signing up, OBC was transacting with all its suppliers, thus proving that implementing e-commerce is a simple IT project.
OBC was clear in what they required from ShipServ: the company wanted to take advantage of TradeNet’s widely accepted e-marketplace to transact with their suppliers, many of whom are already using it to trade electronically with other shipping companies. In addition, they wanted their purchasing system to be automatically updated, which will now be possible as they will be able to send and receive electronic transactions.
We believe our suppliers and our company will both gain from this venture. At the end of the day we want to streamline the full purchasing cycle and it should be a win-win situation for all parties. We are already seeing the reduction in order cycle time and we hope to achieve at the minimum 20% savings. We also hope that the time saved by the elimination of manual re-typing can be used to further develop our purchasing strategy, explains Beeta Soni, Purchasing Manager of OBC.
Ocean Bulk Carriers is a specialist in the bulk carrier market. The group owns and commercially and technically manages a number of dry cargo ships mainly in the handymax category. All commercial activities are handled from London and the company has a branch office in Mumbai, India where seafarers are recruited and all technical procurement for the ships is undertaken.
